Highlights from 4th Annual Facial Paralysis Awareness Walk
It was a lovely afternoon at Shoreline Park in Long Beach, California, on October 15, 2017, for our 4th Annual Facial Paralysis Awareness Walk. Over 70 people joined us for an awareness walk, along with entertainment, food, fellowship, relevant speakers, and door prizes.
Our event began with a one-mile walk around the scenic Shoreline Village. We then regathered at the park for ice cream sundaes from Long Beach Creamery. Attendees also enjoyed face painting with OC Sunshine Designs.
We then heard from several relevant speakers, including Dr. Babak Azizzadeh, Jackie Diels, Dr. Faye Wachs, and Mary Jo Buttafuoco. We then introduced local physical therapists Casey Chaney, along with Joseph Park and Kelli Baruch from Balance Rehabilitation. We were honored to have the entire staff of Balance Rehabilitation volunteer at our walk – their assistance was greatly appreciated.
Our guest announcer and entertainer for the day was comedian Brian Apprille, who shared his personal journey with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, and inspired us to follow our passions in spite of our physical challenges.
We ended with several of our group leaders and members sharing about their personal journeys with facial paralysis, including Lisa McKinley, Barbara Pasternacki, Corianne Weschler, and Jane Maetik.
We extend a special thanks to our many local sponsors who donated prizes for this event. These include Disneyland, The Queen Mary, Ripley’s Wax Museum, The Laugh Factory, and Aquarium of the Pacific, Outback Steakhouse, Islands Restaurant, and several others. And thanks to group member Corianne Weschler for her efforts in obtaining our many great prizes this year!
It was wonderful to see so many people come out to promote the cause of facial paralysis awareness, and we look forward to hosting this annual event again next year!
